Our History

Our Beginnings (1903)

The history of Exchange Bank began almost 120 years ago. Chartered on May 20, 1903, the bank opened its doors to customers on June 3, 1903 at its original location in downtown Milledgeville, 120 West Hancock Street.

Early Expansion (1960s–1970s)

In 1963, Exchange Bank opened a second location on the south side of Milledgeville on Wayne Street.
During the 1960s, the Main Office operated at 208 West Hancock Street, near the site of the current Milledgeville Baldwin County Convention and Visitor Center.

In 1972, the bank opened a third branch on the north side of town in the Milledgeville Mall parking lot. This branch introduced Baldwin County’s first ATM in the fall of 1979, marketed as the “Georgia Express.” Photos from the time show President Otto Morrison in a conductor’s uniform helping his granddaughter complete the very first ATM transaction.

Main Office Relocation and Upgrades (1978–1994)

In December 1978, the Main Office moved to its current location at 250 West Hancock Street.
The building underwent renovations in 1989, adding office space, a training room, and a board room.
In 1994, a drive-up window was added to meet customers’ needs for convenience in a faster-paced world.

New Markets and Services (1995–2004)

In 1995, Exchange Bank launched the New Horizons Travel Club—a business development initiative that grew into a thriving travel community for customers and friends.

In April 1998, the bank expanded into Jones County, opening a branch in Gray, followed by the Lake Oconee office in May 2004.

To further serve customers’ financial needs, Exchange Investment Services, Inc. began operations on December 1, 2003, offering full brokerage and wealth management services through LPL Financial.

Securities and insurance products are offered through LPL or its affiliates, which are separate from Exchange Bank and Exchange Investment Services. These products are: Not FDIC Insured | Not Bank Guaranteed | May Lose Value | Not Guaranteed by any Government Agency | Not a Bank Deposit

Lake Sinclair Branch (2017)

In March 2017, Exchange Bank of Lake Sinclair opened next to the Kroger shopping center in Milledgeville. Designed as a state-of-the-art facility, it features the latest in banking technology.

Our People and Community

Exchange Bank remains deeply rooted in community service and customer care. As local business owner Sheila Sanders shares,

“From the moment we walked in the door, you could feel the warmth and level of customer service. Exchange Bank is the example of how a business should be.” President and CEO John Childs adds, “We provide much more than financial transactions—we have a deep community spirit, and we foster personal relationships and customer trust.”

Resilience Through the Years

Through depressions, wars, inflation, and a pandemic, Exchange Bank has continued to thrive. Today, we operate four locations—two in Milledgeville, one in Gray, and one at Lake Oconee.
